Inpatient Vs. Outpatient Treatment

inpatient vs outpatient treatment

The United States has one of the highest numbers of mental health cases in the world. To treat this epidemic, people have access to many treatment options that require different levels of commitment. To determine which treatment program is right for you, inpatient vs. outpatient treatment, therapists will base this on your current physical and mental health, as well as the severity of the addiction. Patients can get the help they need through residential treatment or a partial hospitalization program

At Northpoint Colorado, we offer all levels of treatment programs to help men and women lead healthy and productive lives. During your initial evaluation, therapists and medical staff will determine the appropriate level of care based on your individual symptoms. They will participate in multiple behavioral and holistic programs to treat the whole person and not just the illness. If you or a loved one is struggling with mental health, call 888.231.1281 today to determine which treatment program is best for you, inpatient vs. outpatient treatment.

Which Treatment Option Is Right for You?

No matter which level of treatment you need, each program gives you access to the same type of therapy. Since addiction has so many different ways that it affects people, it isn’t possible to effectively treat everyone with the same program. Many factors come into play to determine which treatment program is best for you:

  • The severity of your cravings — If you cannot control your cravings, you will need 24/7 care to help you break the addiction.
  • Work and family commitments — Mental health therapy can last for months to several years. Outpatient treatment allows patients to keep up with their lives while attending therapy day or evening.
  • Your physical and mental health — Poor mental health can take a toll on a person’s body. In order to qualify for outpatient treatment, patients will need to be able to keep up with the program while abstaining from drugs or alcohol. If they are unable to do this, they will need to begin with an inpatient program.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient Treatment

Do not assume you have to start with 24/7 care when starting an addiction treatment program. You will be placed in a program that will benefit your symptoms the most and give you the best chances of leading a healthy and productive life.

  1. Residential treatment — An inpatient program offers 24/7 care for several weeks. Residential treatment can last anywhere from 30, 90, and 120 days. Residential treatment can include detoxing for patients with a severe addiction.
  2. Partial hospitalization program (PHP) — A partial hospitalization program is a step down from residential treatment where patients return to their home or sober community each night. Patients attend therapy 3-5 days a week for 4-8 hours a day. Therapists will monitor your progress to determine when you can advance to the next level of care.
  3. Intensive outpatient program (IOP) — An IOP is a less intense outpatient program with a decrease in the number of hours they need to maintain their health. Patients can attend therapy 2-5 days a week for 5-10 hours or more if necessary.
